A: Chiropractic is a natural method of health care.  It is safe and effective.  The basic tenet of the profession is that the body has the ability to function and keep you well if it is operating without interference.  Because the spine is the highway for the nervous system, misalignments here can cause interference with mind/body communications.   Chiropractors are trained to locate and correct the misalignments of the spine, removing the interference.  This allows the natural recuperative powers of the body to function the way they're supposed to.  This not only can relieve pain and other symptoms, but may prevent more serious conditions from developing.  Chiropractors do not utilize drugs or surgery in practice.
A: There isn't a 'one size fits all' answer to this question.  Every case is different. Your doctor should be able to give you an estimate of the approximate time it will take to see some changes.  Chiropractic doctors try to determine the underlying cause of a problem and correct it rather than just remove the symptoms.  How long will it take? will also depend on lifestyle, weight, age, diet, and other factors - like the amount of time the condition has been present.

A: There is no doubt that nutrition plays a vital role in the maintenance of positive health and the prevention of disease.  Chiropractors have considerable training in nutrition and can help counsel you on supplements or other nutrition concepts that may benefit you.  Many leading authorities consider vitamins, minerals, herbs, etc. essential to maintain a healthy body.  Remember, 'natural' does not necessarily mean 'safe'.  These products are powerful and not without the potential for harm if taken incorrectly.  So, whether you purchase them via a recommendation or on you own, be sure you discuss it with a doctor that has training in nutritional supplementation.
A: Spinal discs are shock absorbing cushions between each vertebra of the spine.  They don't actually 'slip' out of the spine, but can be injured in a variety of ways.  Repeated injuries over time and sudden pressure impacts such as from a fall can cause the disc to rupture or herniate.  The same injuries may also cause a misalignment in the spine, forcing the disc to shift or bulge out of normal position.  Both bulging and herniated discs put pressure on the nerves, causing irritation and inflammation, pain, sciatica, and other symptoms.  Herniations occur most frequently in young and middle aged adults.  They are less common in older individuals and rare in children.  They are sometimes misdiagnosed and can lead to unnecessary surgery.  Bulging discs caused by misalignments are far more commom.  These cases are very successfully treated with chiropractic.  Though surgery is sometimes neccessary, a short term trial of chiropractic care is a conservative alternative to immediate surgical intervention in many cases.
A: Chiropractic care for a child is a reasonable and logical consideration.  The spine is subject to stress from the moment of birth, and from the birthing process itself.  As a child develops, crawling, walking, running and other activities result in seemingly harmless falls and accidents.  Chiropractors maintain that these minor incidents should be considered when evaluating the health of our youth.  If you've ever found yourself wondering if there was "any harm done", perhaps a chiropractic evaluation is in order.  Proper spinal health is important for all ages.
A: Sometimes a patient will experience soreness or tenderness in the joints and/or muscles following an adjustment.  This is partly due to the joints beginning to move again.  It is a normal tissue response.  (Think of a runner beginning training after an absence or dental braces being tightened.)  If you react this way, it usually follows the first one or two adjustments only.  It is a good indicator of needed care.  At this initial stage of treatment, it is essential to keep your appointments.  Reactions vary from person to person.  Most people feel immediate relief without ever having soreness.  Some feel no different at all.  Your doctor should inform you of things to expect and how to manage different symptoms between treatments.

Q: Will I get "hooked" on chiropractic?
A: Many patients comment after their intial care that they wish they'd learned about chiropractic sooner.  As you experience the benefits of chiropractic, for whatever your condition, you will likely realize why chiropractors have been recognized as delivering a high level of patient satisfaction in almost every patient outcome study. Chiropractic offers a stimulating alternative to the "treat the symptom" type of care.  Many find that regular chiropractic care, as part of a total health care plan, enables them to function and perform at a higher level.  "Health is not a commodity that comes in a bottle."
